i LOVE Children’s Orchard. I too give a lot away, in fact I have 4 boxes of clothes that have been given to me downstairs as i write that i am going to bring down to the church to give away at the next Store they have. they give away free food, toiletries, clothing, etc. to families in need in the valley and there are plenty of them. but i have some bigger stuff that i want to run down there and see if they will buy them, if not then i will too donate those. last year Children’s Orchard bought much of what i had from the baby stage to then find out 3 days later that we were pregnant with our 3rd! God is so good and has given everything back to me. you’re doing lots of good things to feel about! keep it up mama! love ya!

patty-i found your blog through facebook i think. i love reading about your thoughts on raising your kids and staying home with them. i am so grateful to be able to stay home with my kids, but it is hard sometimes feeling like your worthwhile. i have momentary experiences that confirm my decision and that makes it all worthwhile. just thought i would let you know that i really have enjoyed reading your words and thoughts and find that we have similar ones! it is really good to catch up – sara (clawson) pack

hey there! Well I just got caught up with your writings. The last one I read was the one about Julie and Julia, which i haven’t read the book, but I did see the movie and loved it and it inspired me and made me really start thinking about things in my life and like you we seem to be in the same place right now with the definition for wife/mom/housewife career choice. I loved your all your thoughts, thanks for sharing them. how i wish i was closer to you…i just miss you and being able to sit and talk with you. we must try and get together next time i am in town even if it is a late night coffee at Starbucks in Newport okay?! LOVE YOU!

Ah yes – I do love kids and am excited to have them… in fact my husband and I feel ready NOW but have no money to pay for the expenses of a child! Hopefully in two years when Isaac graduates from school. I guess part of it is that as the oldest of six kids, I grew up very aware of the time and investment that kids require. My mom gave up a career to mother us, and I’m glad she did. I want to give my kids the same thing, so I’m aware the whatever education or work I plan to do in life will need to mostly be done before and after mothering!

Patty, I appreciate your honesty and rawness in this post. I think it is only normal to feel like there has to be more than just the cooking, cleaning, changing diapers etc. You’re a great Mom, that is clear in more ways than one and I think in time things will all fall into place. The Monotany of being a Mother can get to us sometimes, I certainly feel that…but just know how appreciated you are by your family and each day just think of one thing you can do a bit differently to keep your sanity and before you know it, you will be who you desire to be (even if you don’t know ‘who’ that is)! Children are a TRUE blessing, but that doesn’t mean that we have to like everything about Motherhood or losing ones self. I suppose it’s all just part of growing up! ) The Lord gives us trials and tribulations to form who HE wants us to be and I think you’re on the right track!!

hey kacie! thanks for your comments. it’s funny because as i read your fear of having kids and never fulfilling the itch to do something truly meaningful, i think, “NO! kids are so amazing! probably more meaningful than anything else i could do!” if you ever become a mom, it will be wonderful. it changes you, that’s for sure. and those sweet little hearts are so precious. basically, i guess it sometimes takes someone else saying what you just said in order for you to hear it, you know? so thank you for that! i definitely desire to make a significant contribution in areas other than mothering. but in the last few days, as He always does, God has given me some vision for what mothering is and does. He’s gracious like that. i just had a second to look at your blog entry. i’ll read it in more depth when i get a second. (right now i have a squirmy, puky baby in my lap : ))

Oh boy… I am not a mom, but I am a secretary in a desk job, I want to have a family, and I’m often afraid that after the desk job will come kids and I’ll never fulfill that itch to do something truly meaningful, just as you described.

On a very practical level, if you have a vision for something you’d like to do or an area you’d like to work in, volunteer involvement definitely prepares you for a career. It’s all about the contacts you have! Don’t despair that your lack of career experience cuts out your options.
